Do you know the difference between soil and dirt? Soil is alive with living organisms. Dirt is essentially devoid of living things. Healthy soil is full of microbial creatures communicating, eating, pooping and reproducing their way toward soil fertility and healthy plants.
A single teaspoon of rich garden soil can hold up to one billion bacteria, several yards of fungal filaments, thousands of protozoa, and scores of nematodes among others. These are only the tiniest and a few of the creatures that live in soil. All with a role to play in ensuring healthy soil and healthy plants.
